Welcome to CaribVic

CaribVic welcomes all those who are associated with the West Indian / Caribbean community in any way.

We are ‘The Caribbean Association of Victoria (CaribVic)’

This site will provide community news and information for all those with a West Indian / Caribbean heritage in Victoria, Australia.

Our community is as wide as it is diverse, and to all of you we say “Welcome”.

We are responsible for the representation of the cultural heritage for the Caribbean/West Indian community within Victoria.

Exciting things are happening in Victoria with the Caribbean/West Indian community, including:

  • Monthly Brunch: held on the last Sunday of the month at different locations around Melbourne allowing the community to meet regularly
  • Cultural events for children: where the stories and songs of our parents are passed on to the next generation.
  • Youth programmes: creating leaders for future generations.
  • Dinner Dances: where we all come together to celebrate our culture.

How can I get involved?

As a wise man once said “Decisions are made by those who turn up”.

Participate in the community, attend events, encourage others to become involved. We are all volunteers in CaribVic and we are a ‘Not for profit’ organisation so all the funds raised go back into your community projects.

We have both free and ticketed events, and as a member you will benefit from discounts on ticketed community events, so become a member and get involved.

Use this site as your guide, so sit back, read on, and enjoy what we have to offer.

Carnival Party

Our Carnival Fete on 12 February 2012 held at the much approved location at the Elwood Sailing Club, was a hit with all those in attendance.

We could hear the music beckoning us from the car park and at the entrance on the beach. At the top of the stairs, opened up large rooms with polished wooden floors and surrounding floor to ceiling windows overlooking the bay. The stain-glassed signature blue sea-horses in the windows were just charming.

In these sunlit rooms with its breathtaking views and decorated appropriately with palm Trees and dancing carnival girls, created the Caribbean atmosphere we love.  On this level overlooking the sunken dance floor, housed comfortable lounge sofas and coffee tables across from the long well-stocked bar. This area allowed patrons to sit and chat while sipping our complimentary Angostura Rum Punch made exclusively for CaribVic Members.

The sunken dance floor space with the purposely placed dining tables and chairs created the informal community party atmosphere.   The huge well appointed kitchen on this floor made for easy access to the delicious all inclusive Pelau, Salads, and Curry in Roti served compliments CaribVic.

Bright yellow ‘rags’ were given to everyone to wave as they danced and jumped-up to music from the Caribbean, professionally presented by Stick Mareebo. The children joined in formation dances led and choreographed by Stick who did an excellent job and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The parents joined in much to the children’s delight.

Although the weather was intermittent, and the water too cold to swim, the children also enjoyed themselves walking along the rocks, digging in the sand and playing tic-tack-toe on the water.

Thanks to all those who attended, it would not have been the same without you.

We look forward to our next event where we can catch up.

In the mean time, ‘walk good’.
