Congratulations to the CaribVic Steeband who placed 4th in the 2nd Australian Steelband Festival Competition in Brisbane September 2015. We have to thank the CaribVic Committee for supporting us; Denis Gonzalez – G Pan and Heather Gatus – Tenor Director/Arranger; Rita Seethaler, Lisa Nolte and Ken Dorr on Tenors and for their tutorial expertise, input and support for Isaac Sims on 6-Bass; Ann Sharp on Cellos; Paula Reade, Diane Burke and Kester Thomas on Guitars; Pat Thomas Double Seconds; Sarah McNamee and Daniel Agyeman on Tenors.
At the festival we played Lion Sleeps Tonight, Jingo and 100 years of Carnival arranged by Denis Gonzalez and ably assisted by Violet Stannard on the 4-Bass; Nigel Charles on the drums; Michael(Manish) Robinson on Congas; Alvin Rostant and Kenny(Fatso)Roberts for driving the Engine Room .
After a welcome to country by Aunty, The Tamboo Bamboo Ensemble opened the festival with a narration by Alvin Rostant and an Old time calypso sung by Courtney Leiba. CaribVic members Kester Thomas and Diane Burke joined in with bamboo poles and sticks in rhythm.
From 11:00am – 4:15pm the Competition was on in earnest for 10 Steelbands from Australia and New Zealand.
The Bar was popular as well as food stalls with Curry, Jerk, Coconuts, Pineapples, Ice creams, Pizzas, Potatoes, Pan cakes, Dim Sims, drinks hot and cold, clothing, face painting, train ride, and souvenirs enjoyed the music with all those in attendance.
The Carnival Parade with calypso music provided with a roving Pan-on-the-neck and rhythm section was enjoyed by 100 or so Masqueraders around the oval. Kester kept the Trinidad flag up high and waving Carnival style at the front of the band.
The festivities continued indoors with the Calypso party. The Festival Band and a Ramajay with other Tenor Pan Players kept us cheering and dancing and with Nicky Bomba & the Bombastics accompanied by our Nigel Charles with backing drums continued into the night with great music and merriment.
The PANZ AGM on Sunday morning saw Lennox Jordan return as President. Pat Thomas for CaribVic nominated for Ordinary Member and will assist Rita Seethaler and Lisa Nolte in Executive positions.
The 10 Bands massed to play “Netty Netty” and a tribute to Mark Loquan from Perth Pandemix of his composition “Calling Meh” and arranged by Lennox Jordan for the festival.
Then the tropical wind-blown rains bucketed down just as the music stopped to close the Festival.
We packed up and with the help of Matthew Davies our pans were secured at the Brisbane Backpackers storage overnight while we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and bonded with each other and other band members over the 4 days in beautiful Brisbane.
Thank you PANZ for a wonderful festival.
